When does a hotel qualify as sustainable? A hotel is considered sustainable if it takes comprehensive measures to reduce its ecological footprint and promote social responsibility. Some criteria that a sustainable hotel should fulfil are, for example, measures to reduce water consumption, sustainable waste management, the purchase of regional, organic food and fair trade products, fair working conditions and the disclosure of sustainability practices and goals to its guests.
As a sustainable hotel in Lausanne, we at the Hotel Continental Lausanne implement programmes such as ibex fairstay, Cause we care and Swisstainable in addition to ongoing measures and our day-to-day commitment. In this way, we are continuously optimising our measures to become a sustainable hotel in Lausanne. These programmes help us to minimise our environmental impact and at the same time create a holistic sustainable hotel experience for our guests. We also ensure a sustainable textile process by washing all our textiles in Switzerland. In this way, we reduce transport routes and minimise our ecological footprint.
Hotel Continental is taking responsibility
European Energy Award Gold: The City of Lausanne has been awarded the European Energy Award® Gold label for its commitment to a sustainable energy future. This label is awarded to the best ‘pupils’ of the Swiss ‘Cités de l'Energie’ label. These cities have implemented at least 75% of the plan to which they have committed themselves.
ibex fairstay certificate - we have achieved Gold level! In collaboration with the Vatel hotel management school, several measures were taken and various sustainability certificates were analysed. We decided in favour of the ibex fairstay certificate and are proud to have achieved the ibex fairstay Gold level.
ibex fairstay accompanies accommodation providers on their way to sustainable management. It recognises hotels and other forms of accommodation that fulfil their responsibility for sustainable action to an above-average degree. The holistic support includes the five dimensions of management, ecology, regionality, social issues and finance. Practical opportunities for improvement are identified on the basis of a catalogue of measures as well as supported calculations and analyses. Depending on their sustainability performance, businesses are awarded different assessment levels. The unique industry solution is recognised for the ‘Swisstainable Level III - leading’ award from the Competence Centre for Sustainability (KONA) of the Swiss Tourism Association (STV).

We are online: High-performance Wi-Fi allows our guests to stream films and music quickly, as well as hold digital conferences in the conference and event area. All free of charge, of course.
Digital check-in & check-out: Time is precious, which is why you can check in and out of Manz Hotels quickly and conveniently online. You can complete your check-in with all registration data before your arrival via smartphone or PC. Using the QR code or your hotel reservation number, you can encode your room card at the hotel and drop into the many pillows in your room without any detours. And if you want, you can also check out again digitally.
Security: To ensure that digitalisation remains exciting and does not become a risk for data and personal information, we have taken appropriate precautions. We use the security solutions of our partners HotelPlus, Six Payments and Code2Order.

- We co-operate with SBB and have the possibility to issue tickets ourselves and make them available to our guests
- CO2 reduction: Engagement with HotellerieSuisse to save fossil fuels and electricity, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions in accordance with an agreement with the Swiss Confederation for the period from 2013 to 2020
- Where possible, we favour bulk packaging instead of individual items in order to reduce packaging (soap, cleaning products, breakfast products, etc.)
- Whenever possible, we work with large glass surfaces in our conversions to reduce electrical lighting
- We use LED lamps in our hotels, as these are currently the most environmentally friendly light sources
- Our cleaning company ‘Enzler pro SA’ is ISO 14001 certified
- Cleaning of towels only at the request of the guest during the stay
- Possibility for guests to cancel the cleaning service and thus benefit from a price reduction
- Separation of waste (compost, paper, aluminium, plastic, glass...) wherever possible
- Insulation of the façade to improve heat and noise insulation and generally generous insulation of all structural elements
- UV protection film on all windows and in all hotels of the group
- Euler Basel / City Inn Basel: free charging for electric cars
- Rooms do not need energy when there are no guests
- Promotion of tap water quality and use of water carafes instead of PET bottles
- Correspondence to be handled electronically wherever possible
- Equal pay for women and men for comparable work
- We refrain from interim work and work on call that puts employees at risk or does not respect the LGAV
- Responsibility: Flat hierarchies to motivate employees to take on more responsibility. We believe that both guests and employees are happier when everyone is given maximum autonomy

ibex fairstay - Level Gold
Certification from ibex fairstay - Level Gold for the Continental: Together with the Vattel hotel management school, further measures were tackled and various sustainability certificates were analysed. The demanding ibex fairstay award has now been chosen as the most suitable certificate. We have decided in favour of the Ibex Fairstay certificate and are very proud to have received the Level Gold. 
Over 60 hotels, hostels and clinics throughout Switzerland already proudly bear the ibex fairstay label. They have been inspected by accredited auditors and assessed by the independent certification committee. Depending on their sustainability performance, the establishments are awarded ibex fairstay bronze, silver, gold or platinum.
Ibex fairstay label mean?
Sustainability must be consciously anchored in management. Internal structures and processes are adapted accordingly: Employee management, internal organisation, controlling, guest orientation, innovation.
The careful use of resources is very important to us. That's why we pay attention to environmental compatibility and potential savings when it comes to energy, water, waste, purchasing, furnishings and surroundings.
The added value should remain in the region wherever possible and strengthen it. In this way, we create jobs, support traditions, reduce transport routes and inspire enthusiasm for regional specialities and special features.
Guests and employees should feel comfortable. We make sure that the general conditions are right for everyone: Consideration of guests' wishes, fair and supportive working conditions for employees, inclusion of suppliers, harmony with the local population, accessibility.
Only an economically sound business can operate sustainably and secure jobs. We therefore place a strong focus on earnings, performance, cost control, investments, risk management and guest and employee satisfaction.
Cause we care
‘Cause we care’ - let's do things together: As part of the myclimate ‘Cause We Care ’ initiative, we are giving you the opportunity to make an effective contribution to climate protection and sustainability together with us by making a voluntary contribution. With CHF 3 per overnight stay, you support our sustainability measures and offset the CO2 emissions of your stay. In return, we promise to double the contribution. Part of the amount will be used to support a community reforestation project in Nicaragua. This means you will have a climate-neutral holiday. The remaining amount will be invested by us in sustainability measures on site or in operational sustainability.
Committed in Everyday Life
In 2023, 3594 PET bottles were recycled in Contiental. That corresponds to a total of 99 kg.
We reduce the water in the bathrooms. This measure does not affect your comfort in any way.

Swissness & Sustainability
Switzerland Tourism has launched the ‘Swisstainable’ campaign to demonstrate that Switzerland is a sustainable travel destination. In Switzerland, we have always endeavoured to strike a harmonious balance between the needs of our guests, the local population and the environment. We are continuously developing the Hotel Continental towards sustainability and have currently been awarded ‘Level II Swisstainable engaged’.
